ETIAS Visa Waiver for Travelers from Honduras

In this article

Hondurans travel rights into the EU are set to dramatically change from the start of 2023. Right now, Hondurans can enter the EU without having to prepare any documentation. All they need is a passport and a plane ticket. The new ETIAS (European Travel Information Authorisation System) visa waiver will end this freedom, and all citizens wishing to make travel to the Schengen area for less than 90 days will have to arrange one.
Doing so is easy enough though, requiring minor documentation and easily-remembered information. Citizens of Honduras and the 60 other nations planned to be part of the ETIAS scheme should not find it inconveniences them too much.

Why Has The EU Cut Back on Hondurans' Travel Rights?

The dream of a conflict-free world is over. Terrorist, criminal, and espionage threats lurk around every corner. Everyone coming into the EU must be treated with caution, and for that to happen, everyone coming into the EU must be traceable.
The new measures gives the EU a clearer view of who is coming in, and it will allow them to cross-reference more entrances with Interpol databases.

Which Hondurans Will Need to Arrange an ETIAS VISA?

The ETIAS visa waiver is a requirement for any Hondurans who want to enter the Schengen Area after 2023. It is aimed at short-term travel so it comes with a cap of 90 days.
The ETIAS visa is a requirement of entry regardless of the age of the Honduran. Even children and the very elderly will have to get hold of an ETIAS visa waiver.

Is a Normal Visa Ever More Appropriate for Hondurans Travelling to Europe?

After the changes, an ETIAS visa will certainly be the easiest way to visit most of Europe. However, it comes with strict time-period limits and does not apply outside of the Schengen area. Breaking the rules of an ETIAS visa waiver may lead to the Honduran being placed into detention and deported by border force agencies.
If a Honduran wants to travel for longer than 90 days, or they want to visit non-Schengen nations like Britain or Russia, they must arrange proper visa documentation relevant for their planned travel.
Around 5% of Hondurans are expected to be incompatible with the requirements of an ETIAS visa waiver. These Hondurans will find it difficult to acquire a normal visa if their ETIAS application is rejected, but this will be the only way for them to legally enter the Schengen area.

What Rights Will Holding an ETIAS Visa Waiver Give to Hondurans?

The ETIAS visa gives Hondurans the right to visit all the nations listed below.
  • Poland
  • Germany
  • Monaco
  • Malta
  • Portugal
  • Sweden
  • Belgium
  • Netherlands
  • France
  • Slovenia
  • Estonia
  • Switzerland
  • Vatican City
  • Denmark
  • Slovakia
  • Austria
  • Czech Republic
  • Hungary
  • Spain
  • Norway
  • Greece
  • Latvia
  • Italy
  • Finland
  • San Marino
  • Luxembourg
  • Iceland
  • Lithuania
  • Liechtenstein
Hondurans should remember that not all of these countries are part of the EU. A minority of Schengen states have full sovereignty, such as Iceland. Some micro-states like Vatican City are not officially part of the EU or the Schengen area. However, their territory is within a Schengen and EU member, so they will be unofficially included in ETIAS measures.

Hondurans' ETIAS Visa Applications

Honduras's must prepare thoroughly to apply for ETIAS visa, compiling documentation and answers to the questions on the ETIAS visa application. The required documentation is the personal basics that Hondurans need to enter the EU: a passport and a credit card.
Most of the questions on the application are similarly basic: full name, date of birth and birthplace, parents personal information. Some of the questions are more complicated and Hondurans will need to answer carefully to avoid falsifying information that may get them into trouble later. These are...
  • Their planned travel itinerary
  • Their travel to Europe in the past.
  • Their previous trips to conflict zones
  • Their terrorist, criminal, or human trafficking past

What Should a Honduran with Their Successful Application?

The ETIAS visa waiver is an online document that will be emailed to the Honduran's email address. With this document ready to show to border control in the EU, Hondurans will know their travels will not be delayed any further. They may complete their bookings and prepare to depart.

Hondurans with Rejections

Not many Hondurans will be unsuccessful, and those that are should appeal. A formal appeal will be met with requests for more documentation, so that discrepancies can be cleared up.
Hondurans have 96 hours to send off the requested documentation. The receiving nation has four weeks to decide if the Honduran may enter their territory.
