ETIAS FAQs

How I can check if my ETIAS is still valid?

In this article

From the date that your ETIAS is approved, it will be valid for a period of three years, or until the passport that it is linked to expires, whichever date is sooner. During the three years of validity, you are able to use the ETIAS as many times as you wish, provided that you do not overstay the limit of 90 days in any one trip.
You are able to travel to as many Schengen countries as you wish to within the three years that your ETIAS is valid. It is also possible to use the ETIAS to tour around Europe, so if you wanted to travel to France, Spain, Germany and any other countries within the Schengen zone, you could do that trip using your ETIAS while it is valid. Alternatively, you can make unlimited repeat trips to Europe over the course of the three years the ETIAS is valid for.

What happens when my ETIAS or passport expires?

Once your ETIAS expires, you will be able to apply for a new ETIAS , following the exact same application process as you did with your original application. If your passport expires while your ETIAS is still valid, you are not able to transfer your ETIAS onto your new passport.

How Long Does an ETIAS last?

If your passport expires and you want to travel to the Schengen Area, you should apply for your passport and once it arrives, you can apply for your new ETIAS, providing the details of your new passport, including passport number. Once you have answered all of the questions on the ETIAS application and paid your application fee, you can submit the application for your new ETIAS.
If your new ETIAS is approved, you will receive an email to confirm it has been electronically linked to your new passport. You can then travel to any country in the Schengen Area, using your new passport and your new ETIAS.

Can my ETIAS be cancelled?

It is important that you do not breach the terms of the ETIAS, as Schengen Zone authorities have the power to cancel your ETIAS and you can be refused entry into the Schengen Zone , for example, if you overstay the ETIAS limit in the Schengen Zone. You must also only use ETIAS for the travel purposes that are permitted, i.e. you can use ETIAS for tourism, business, or transit purposes but if you want to start work or study in Europe, you will need to apply for the relevant visa that will authorize this.

Can I apply for a new ETIAS before my old one expires?

If your ETIAS is due to expire before you are due to travel to the Schengen Area, you can still apply for a new ETIAS and it will just supersede your existing ETIAS and will be available to use as soon as you receive confirmation that it has been approved. It will then be valid for three years, or until your passport expires, whichever date is sooner.
